Your determination will decide how far you get in life, this is what we learned while speaking to Wardrobe Stylist Jessi Jacq . How else would you get to style countless Celebrities? Read below to find out how she turned her dreams into realities!
1.Where are you from originally and how did you end up in NYC?
I'm originally from Montgomery, Alabama ,so, there aren't too many opportunities there. I was the classic case of small town girl with big city dreams and ended up in NYC working at a small hip hop magazine first as a copywriter.
2.What made you want to enter into the world of fashion? Why styling?
Fashion is something that I always had a passion for but, it wasn't until 2009 when I styled my first fashion show back home that I was like, I could get use to this! It gave me an natural high.
3.Did you feel that styling was second nature to you from the beginning or was it more difficult to get into the swing of things?
I always felt like it was something I would love to pursue but, suppressed my passion for it because my parents didn't understand it as a job, only as a hobby.
4.What inspires your styling?
Life. I can be easily inspired just walking the streets of New York, art, people, movies, nostalgia, buildings, religion. Any and everything. Art is the imitation of life right?
5.Which celebrities have you styled?
Sheesh! A lol
I've styled Ester Dean, The Hadid family, Kirk Knight from Pro Era, Jourdan Dunn, Maria Bourgeois, Lu Wien, Catfish and the Bottleman, Lucky Blue, Hailey Baldwin, just to name a few.
6.We know you were at the met gala this year; that being said who did you style?
There is a team of three of us and this year we were in charge of Gigi Hadid, Yolanda Hadid, Anwar Hadid, Tommy and Dee Hilfiger and Tommy and Thalìa Motolla.
7.Were you able to attend the Met Gala? If so, what was your experience?
No I wasn't able to attend the actual gala but, the experience was great! I got to meet a few celebrities and designers.
8.What are your favorite brands/designers?
My favorite brands are Comme, JW Anderson, Loewe, Gucci, Sacai and Junn J. My favorite designers are Thom Browne, Rei Kawakubo, Junya Watanabe, Alessandro Michele, Raf Simons and JW Anderson.
9.What has been your biggest challenge in the fashion industry?
My biggest challenge has been being a black woman. I feel like we get overlooked. It's not too many black people at the top especially black women.
10. What's next for you?
I'm in a building stage.I'm doing more editorials and directing work of my own so I can start the process to become this creative powerhouse.
11.What would you say to young women and men looking to follow in your footsteps and break into this business?
Be steadfast and patient. If this is something you want to pursue then go in with high expectations and optimism. There are going to be some long days and nights but the journey is absolutely worth it.
